The Engineering Lab Assistant/Tutor – TAP assists students with their lecture and lab material during scheduled hours at the Engineering Lab.
They may also assist the Engineering Professors with the Special Projects Classes.
Reports To Engineering Program Chair What position(s) reports to this position? None.
Minimum Education/Experience Must have at least 50 hours toward an AS or BS degree in Engineering.
Must have made a C or better in two (2) or more courses equivalent to Engineering courses taught at OCCC.
Such courses would include: - Rigid Body Mechanics/Statics - Strength of Materials - Dynamics - Electrical Science - Thermodynamics - Fluid Mechanics - Materials, Design & Manufacturing Work or classroom experience that includes welding, utilization of power tools and/or machinery.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Basic knowledge of laboratory equipment, materials and procedures.
Knowledge of safety and health procedures for handling hazardous chemicals and power equipment.
Ability to orally communicate using the English language, laboratory procedures and theoretical concepts to an individual student or group of students.
Positive human relations skills.
Visual ability, corrected, to observe and detect signs of hazards and obstacles that may cause injury to students and staff in the Engineering Lab.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Medium work: This position requires the person to occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force and frequently exert up to 20 pounds of force and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: This position requires the person to frequently move about the classroom and engineering lab area to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position.
This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to faculty, staff and students to perform the essential functions of the position.
Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.
This position requires the person to frequently position self to work on equipment in Engineering Lab area.
This position requires the person to occasionally use upper and lower body to exert force up to 50 pounds to push, pull and/or lift materials or equipment.
This position frequently requires the person to operate and inspect Engineering Lab equipment, to instruct students on proper operation.
VISUAL ACUITY: This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.
WORKING CONDITIONS This position’s essential functions are performed in an indoor, classroom and lab area.
This position requires the person to communicate above sufficient noise and exchange accurate information in various situations.
This position requires the person to be able to frequently move in close proximity to Engineering Lab equipment located in the lab area.
This position requires the person to frequently be exposed to fumes, odors, dusts, and gases associated with an Engineering Lab area.
Preferred Qualifications None.
Required Training Work Hours 10-25 hours per week, flexible schedule Monday through Friday during posted building hours.
